I have a very small amount of people on my msn and that is mainly because I hate using it.
I hate using msn because I’m terrible at it. I can never express myself right online. Ever. I always come off as this immature, geeky, childish, obnoxious loser. Totally different to how I really am in person! I just don’t transcend well you know? No, you don’t know? Well I don’t do MSN well, all right. Especially when I never meet you before.
So why do I even use it? File transfer mostly, and very lose, very black and white conversations. Like "What time?" Where at?" "How much?" sort of thing.
I’m a digital artist so a lot of my clients are online, and so are tech geeks and code monkeys I go to for help sometimes. So MSN is great for that but if your all "Hi Im Stacey from Texas, asl?!" Noooooooo..
Like I said, It’s worst to have when I never meet the people on my list. I’ve never ever successfully made a friend that meet me first online, I mean NEVER! 0% success rate! And compare that to how I almost always make friends fine in person! That ratio proves that it is a "It’s Just you Efraim." thing and it proves that said problem is a real problem- hell it’s a handicap.
But not only am I saying, "Hey, I dont ~DO~ MSN." but I’ll going to be bold enough to say that MSN is risky and should be avoided when first meeting someone. So not only am I crappy online but so is everyone! And I’m not just crying wolf- things like the transcendence of communication, avatar association and the responsibility of the reader comes into play.
It’s been proved that communication is 80% non-content. Um.. what I mean is that communication is very little what you say and more to do with how and when you say it. So what does that say for MSN? Where does that 80-90% go? It gets replaced with interpretation. That’s where avatar association comes in. If I know you in person and have first hand experienced that 80-90% then I can easily associate from my experiences to what im getting from your avatar. Finally, the thing that no one realizes is that the reader, unlike a listener, has just as much responsibility as the speaker. To read threw, to consider and to compute and wait and respond are all things listeners never have to do!
So consider that risk when meeting someone new online. Take that risk and move to the phone or mic or webcam, or hell be adventures and meet in person. The degree of fault is different from anyone but the risk is always there. For me the degree is huge. I’m a fucking handicap online.
